Words We Choose
SCRIPTURE
Proverbs 18:21 MSG Words kill, words give life; they’re either poison or fruit—you choose.
NUGGET
Have you ever started a new day, determined to tame your tongue? It sounds simple enough, but only a few minutes into the morning, it’s easy to see why James labeled the tongue a “restless evil, full of deadly poison.” (James 3:8) Even on our best days, it can be hard to remember that the words we speak over someone, are capable of bringing life or death. This can feel disheartening until we remember this…Jesus gave us the Holy Spirit to help and counsel us in our weakest moments! John 14:16-17 says, “And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another Advocate, who will never leave you. He is the Holy Spirit, who leads into all truth…”
ACTIVATION
Ask the Holy Spirit to help you breathe during a difficult moment and to choose words that give life rather than death. Hurling a clever comeback never feels as good as we imagine it to be.
PRAYER
Holy Spirit, please help me today to pause and ask for Your strength when I feel tempted to hurt others with my words. I need Your power and self control to love others well. Thank You for Your presence that’s always with me!
